it has been around a year since i wrote anything on here, and what a productive year it has been! I’m now at Loughborough University design school studying Industrial Design & Technology. My general design skills; i feel, have improved massively over the past year. I wanted a way of logging my drawings in a digital format as well as other work i do on the course and this reminded of my blog. x
Beijing architects MAD have designed a skyscraper for Chongqing, China, with gardens at each level. Rather than consider the project vertically, the architects envisage a stack of floors, each slice shifted horizontally to create spaces for gardens and patios. The 385 metre-high building will be called Urban Forest.

Personally, i think this is just crazy and slightly pointless. If we’re going to promote being green i think there are better ways to do it than just build yet another sky scraper in China.
Product designer Zihni Yalcin has designed a three-pin electrical plug that folds up for easy transportation. Called ThinPlug, the product is suitable for devices that don’t need to be earthed. The plastic earth pin folds away between the live and neutral pins. The product has been awarded with a Red Dot Award. ThinPlug was born out of frustration. On buying a slim latest designed laptop one day in 2006, Zihni Yalcin queried where he could store his standard UK 3 pin plug that came with it, as with all portable electronic equipment. He did not get a convincing answer and so he decided to find one. And he did!

At last something useful.
New York architects Asymptote have completed a hotel that straddles a race track in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Called The Yas Hotel, the project consists of two towers linked by a bridge over the racetrack and is covered in a glass and steel canopy. The building is now open to the public following a pre-opening during the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix at the end of October.

A modular furniture set that is flexible and can be transformed into a variety of furniture solutions. I’m very interested in modular design, and this particular product caught my eye whilst browsing www.dezeen.com during my lunch break and i thought i’d share it.
With university fast approaching, i’m beggining to improve my drawing skills so that i can put together a nice portfolio. The videos at IDSketching.com are a great place to start for beginners and experts alike! I’ll be getting myself some quality markers sometime soon so i can get used to rendering, and then when xmas finally arrives i’ll be unboxing the Wacom Intuos 4 tablet for some CAD work hopefully!
Check this website out for a whole load of information and inspiration from the global design community.
Also from the world of Japanese design, what do you think this strange looking structure could be? Its none other than a furniture set!
It took me a while to work out how it could be possible, but by seperating the sculpture you have 4 chairs and a table. Innovation gone mad! But i love it.
